Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate is a globally respected physician, health economist, and visionary policymaker currently serving as Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, a role he resumed in 2023 with a mandate to transform the nation's healthcare landscape. With an illustrious career that bridges national leadership and global health governance, Dr. Pate previously held the role of Global Director for Health, Nutrition, and Population at the World Bank Group, where he also served as Director of the Global Financing Facility (GFF)—a multibillion-dollar initiative aimed at improving health outcomes for women, children, and adolescents in low- and middle-income countries.
He is a Professor of the Practice of Public Health Leadership at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he holds the prestigious Julio Frenk Professorship. A tireless advocate for equitable healthcare systems, Dr. Pate is widely recognized for his expertise in primary healthcare, immunization programs, and strategic health financing. Dr. Pate previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health (2011–2013) and was Executive Director and CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), where he led groundbreaking efforts to combat polio and strengthen health systems across the country.
